Chair, Royal Marsden

The largest comprehensive cancer centre in Europe, with a global reputation for delivering high quality patient care, cancer research and education, The Royal Marsden, which employs c£4500 staff and has an annual turnover of c£490m, is both a specialist cancer hospital and the UK’s national Biomedical Research Centre for Cancer. The Royal Marsden’s mission is to make a national and global contribution to cancer research and treatment, working collaboratively with the Institute for Cancer Research, its principal research partner, with NHS partners across the capital and nationally, with the emerging Integrated Care Systems, and with RM Partners, the Cancer Alliance for West London, founded and hosted by The Royal Marsden, which is improving outcomes for patients locally.

Driven by the conviction that patients, entrusting their lives to The Royal Marsden, deserve the very best, The Royal Marsden is now working to ensure excellent cancer care through the pandemic to the widest possible population, to accelerate early diagnosis, and to develop new models of care. Alongside the unveiling of the new state-of-the-art Oak Cancer Centre in Sutton early next year, the Trust is also delivering a significant digital transformation programme which will improve further its ability to care for its patients, to research and understand their cancers and the best possible treatments, and to maximise the opportunities digital services and AI represent.

Led by the Chair, the Board of The Royal Marsden plays a critical strategic leadership role across the full breadth of this extraordinary organisation’s work and future plans, ensuring that the Trust delivers to the stretching goals cancer requires it to set. The Chair leads and develops the Board and the Non-Executive Directors to maximise the contribution they collectively make to The Royal Marsden’s leadership, working closely with the Chief Executive, Dame Cally Palmer, to ensure that this world-class national institution has the greatest possible impact on cancer care, treatment and research.

This is an opportunity for an experienced Board leader to contribute to cancer care and research at the highest level in an organisation wholly committed to that mission. At this time of great opportunity, investment and challenge for healthcare as a whole, The Royal Marsden is seeking to appoint a successor to Charles Alexander CBE, who completes his successful six-year tenure with the organisation later in 2022. The appointed candidate will demonstrate absolute commitment to The Marsden’s values – pioneering change, pursuing excellence, working collaboratively and showing kindness – and will bring the breadth of their professional and personal experience to the Trust’s strategy, leadership and performance as it strives to deliver its five-year strategic plan, and beyond.
