Moorfields Eye Hospital, Non-Executive Director (Chair of Finance & Performance Committee)

As a world-class centre of excellence for ophthalmic research and education, and the leading provider and innovator of eye health services in the UK, Moorfields Eye Hospital’s reputation is international. With more than 2,500 staff, our reputation for providing the highest quality ophthalmic care has developed over 200 years and we are proud to be supported by one of the most diverse workforces in the NHS.

Our primary focus is the care and treatment of NHS patients with a wide range of eye problems, from common complaints to rare conditions not treated anywhere else in the UK. We perform well against national and local standards and 93% of our patients would recommend us to friends and family. Our clinical outcomes and safety record are excellent, evidenced amongst the best in the world and achieved while also delivering an operating surplus against the financial plan. As a Biomedical Research Centre, we are leading on genetic and translational research in ophthalmology and work in partnership with a number of international leading technology companies including our groundbreaking artificial intelligence diagnostic work with Google Health.

Moorfields’ Non-Executive Directors have a critical strategic leadership role across the full breadth of this extraordinary organisation’s work and future plans, including the oversight of our move to Oriel, our new world-class hospital and research facility in partnership with the UCL Institute of Ophthalmology and Moorfields Eye Charity, which will open in 2027. The Chair of the Finance & Performance Committee, in particular, leads the Committee in assuring the performance of the Trust across the range of performance indicators including on access standards, quality, workforce and finance.

This is an opportunity to contribute to ophthalmology and research at the highest level, in an organisation wholly committed to that challenge. At a time of huge challenge and possibility across healthcare, Moorfields’ high-performing board are looking for a leader with a business building mindset to join them, to chair the Finance & Performance Committee and to bring the breadth of their professional and personal experience to the Trust’s strategy, leadership performance and culture. Whether an experienced board leader or stepping into their first non-executive role, the ideal candidate will be a qualified Accountant with a strong track record of commercial leadership and an absolute commitment to Moorfields’ values – equity, excellence, and kindness.
