Independent Non-Executive Director, British Horseracing Authority

Closing date: 16th January 2023

The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) is the governing and regulatory body for British horseracing, which seeks to ensure the effective regulation, integrity and success of the sport. The BHA’s mission is to build a brighter future for the sport of horseracing, for the people working in the industry and for the horses.

The BHA’s role is to act for and on behalf of the whole sport, ensuring that the highest standards apply on and off the racecourse. It aims to be a global leader in racing regulation and works with stakeholders to promote the sport in order to make Great Britain the home of the most compelling racing in the world.

The BHA now seek to appoint an Independent Non-Executive Director (INED) to the board, following the appointment of one of the existing INEDs as Independent Chair. This individual will be a partner and trusted advisor to the existing Board, complement the existing skillsets, and help guide the business through its next phase of development.

The BHA, in partnership with Weatherbys, has recently launched Racing Digital, the next generation platform for the management of British horseracing, transforming the way in which customers interact with the sport, and is also playing a leading role in the development of a digital strategy for the horseracing industry. To successfully deliver these initiatives, it is crucial that the successful candidate will have an established commercial background ideally with a focus on digital marketing, social media and customer engagement, and experience of successfully navigating matrix environments to produce exceptional results.

They will also bring a genuine interest in and affinity with horseracing, which is critical given the complex stakeholder environment within the industry.

The individual will also be a member of the People and Remuneration Committee with the commitment of at least two meetings a year.

The BHA, together with British racing’s other leading organisations, has published an “Industry Commitment” to diversity and inclusion, to ensure racing truly is a sport for everyone and to help the sport grow and thrive in the future. As part of this, the BHA has committed to increasing its Board diversity across all protected characteristics, and in particular in relation to gender and ethnically and culturally diverse communities. It recognises the wide benefits that greater depth and breadth of experience and perspective can bring, in terms of accountability, innovation, engagement and growth, and is keen to bring these to bear for the benefit of its sport.

Applications from these candidates are therefore particularly welcomed and encouraged, and the BHA would be pleased to discuss its commitment to inclusivity with interested candidates.
